Welcome Baseball 2008…farewell to Shea!

shea stadium

As we are on the verge of another season of Major League Baseball, the excitement is tempered by the realization that this will be the final Opening Day of Shea Stadium. Sure it’s a smelly, old, broken down relic, but it’s our smelly, old, broken down relic. It will be a sad day when the final game is played at our beloved playground. I’ll always remember the late 70′s/early 80′s getting discount tickets from milk cartons, buying upper deck seats and just walking down to the better ones, cheering when the attendance quiz on the scoreboard was the lowest number of the 3 choices.

Then the tide turned. Keith, Mookie, Darryl, Doc, Sid, Darling…then Gary Carter. Then put in Wally, HoJo, Ray Knight, and Dykstra and we had the magical 1986 season.

But this is about Shea Stadium, named after William A. Shea, who brought National League baseball back to NY. It will be a sad day when the last game is played. I wish the stadium could be imploded but that is against NY regulations, so it will be taken down slowly, unceremoniously, piece by piece.

So all Met fans should raise a toast on Monday’s Opening Day to the great Shea Stadium, scene of a lifetime of memories.

Play Ball!

    James:

I never really followed baseball until I married a Mets fan.

Glad to hear you’re a fan because now so am I.

By the way, I wasn’t aware you kicked off this blog (but I’m always late to the party).

I’ve added you to the voxmarketising blog roll.

And you’ve chosen one of my favorite templates too. Nice job.

    Best always,
    - Peter

    Hi Peter –
Thanks for stopping by and adding me to your blogroll. I really enjoy reading your blog, very informative. I’m not exactly sure where I’m going yet with this one but it’s been fun so far. I haven’t had time to tweak the template but I do like the look of it. I even like the stock pictures!
Thank your wife for bringing a new fan into the fold. Should be an exciting season, although it’s off to a rough start with Pedro going down.

    Keep in touch!
    James
